How do you clean the black soot from a gas fireplace?

It is everywhere the walls, floor, pictures, knick-knacks. I've never had a gas fireplace and we cleaned the chimney but now we are getting soot everywhere. Our chimney only has 2 settings the first notch or fully open. We have it on the first notch. Is this wrong? Is there a specific way to arrange the logs? I have heard that there is. I have tried pine-sol, fantastic, and plain old soap and water with some elbow grease, none of these have worked.
